- Hillbilly Elegy: A Culture in Crisis
J.D. Vance, a former marine, Yale Law School graduate, and New York Times bestselling author of Hillbilly Elegy, gives a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. Tracing his family history as well as the slow decline of this particular demographic, he tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. In this incredibly timely talk, Vance sheds light on an often forgotten corner of the country, offering not just a powerful picture of how upward mobility really feels, but also the loss of the modern-day American dream.

With an audience of mostly educators & leaders from Appalachian Ohio and a few from inner city Columbus, he REALLY resonated and came across as very genuine and authentic... he was terrific during the Q&A session because as people asked questions, inquired into some personal situations and asked he opinions on things, he was very open and offered opinions—but clearly said, as to most areas of inquiry, he was not an expert, and offered his opinions based on his experiences but said repeatedly he was not an expert.

Finally, he was very gracious and patient in signing books for all who asked. It couldn’t have gone better!!! Of the four “books talk” authors we’ve had in the past 3 years, JD was the best!
People swarmed him after his remarks to tell him how important his book is and to get their books signed. He was so kind and generous talking to attendees, taking photos, signing books.National Institute on Retirement Security
