She’s come back from major injuries to win international titles, and she’s persevered to become one of top tennis players in history. An entrepreneur as well, Serena has also branched out off the court to pursue her love of fashion, running a successful line of clothing, handbags and jewelry. Serena was born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan, to Richard Williams and Oracene Price. While still an infant, the family moved to Compton, California where she began playing tennis at the age of four. At nine, Serena and her family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida. Since that time, she has become one of the most dominant figures in tennis.
Serena recently won the 2017 Australian Open singles title, breaking the record for most Grand Slams won. In the summer of 2016, Serena won the Wimbledon Championship in both single and doubles alongside her sister Venus and competed in the Rio Olympics Games in both singles and doubles.
2015 was a year for the ages. Serena won four grand slams: Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open, and the 2014 US Open, a feat affectionately known as the “Serena Slam.” With such accomplishments, Sports Illustrated named Serena their “2015 Sportsperson of the Year.”
Overall, Serena has 23 Grand Slam singles and 14 Grand Slam doubles. She’s won 768 Professional singles matches, 184 doubles professional matches, 71 WTA singles titles, 23 WTA doubles titles, Gold Medal in Doubles in 2000 (Sydney), 2008 (Beijing), 2012 (London), Gold Medal in Singles in 2012 (London).
Off the court, fashion and acting are Serena's passions. Named a “Fashion Trendsetter” by Vogue, Serena used her passion to create her HSN Signature Statement collection and her most recent line premiered at New York Fashion Week in September 2016. In 2016 alone, Serena was featured on the covers of Self, Glamour, WSJ Magazine and Fader.
Serena's acting credits include an appearance on Drop Dead Diva; a role as an ex-gangster on Showtime's Street Time; and a leading role on an episode of Lifetime's The Division. Serena has also lent her vocal talents to The Simpsons and Disney's Higgleytown Heroes. In 2011, Serena’s passion for nails came to fruition when she partnered with OPI to create her Glam Slam Series, an assortment of colors inspired by the tennis and fashion icon.
Serena, a dedicated philanthropist, continues to work with the Serena Williams Fund, Williams Sister Fund, UNICEF and Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation. In the fall of 2016, Serena joined philanthropic forces with her sister Venus to establish the Williams Sister Fund where they launched their first endeavor in their hometown of Compton: the Yetunde Price Resource Center. Named after their eldest sister who was killed by senseless gun violence, the Resource Center conducts community asset inventory and develops a comprehensive resource network designed to connect residents affected by violence with service providers. In February 2016, Serena partnered with Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation to build a school in Jamaica has funded and opened two schools in Africa that are currently in operation. She is a global Goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.
Serena splits her time between Palm Beach, Florida and Los Angeles, California with her fiancé, Alexis Ohanian, and her Yorkshire terrier, Chip.
